Should CSX Give Up Hudson Division to NYC MTA?

The CSX railroad may have to shrink a bit to regain some growth and profitability. First target could be the upper portion of the NYC MTA Metro North “Hudson Line”. Would leave CSX with the “Chicago Line”. From New Jersey all the way through New York State.

Actually, a lot has been done. In October 2011, CSX and Amtrak reached an agreement for Amtrak to lease the Hudson Subdivision between Poughkeepsie and Schenectady, with Amtrak assuming maintenance and capital responsibilities. CSX will retain freight rights over the line, which hosts only five freights a day. Amtrak will use federal funds to double track the line between Rensselaer and Schenectady, and add an additional station track at the Albany-Rensselaer station. See more from the Albany Times Union and the draft document by NY State DOT

PoughkeepsieStation

Poughkeepsie

This is the end of current Metro-North service from New York. Maintenance North of here is performed by CSX/AMTRAK. It is 74 miles from Grand Central.

CSX will retain freight rights over the line, which hosts only five freights a day. Amtrak will use federal funds to double track the line between Rensselaer and Schenectady, and add an additional station track at the Albany-Rensselaer station. Amtrak sees the lease as key to improving Empire Service speeds and frequencies. Amtrak officially assumed control on December 1, 2012, with trains in the section now dispatched by the Amtrak Control and Command Center in New York City.

There is a need for Metro North trains North of here.
